To Serve

by Dave Nock

What does it mean to serve? We have nurses, prior military, teachers, librarians and many others in the congregation that have spent whole careers in the service of others. Long days and nights, away from family, away from other interests but in the service of others. In many cases serving others that may not realize the sacrifice being made or appreciate the help.

To serve means, at its core, to give yourself for the good of someone else. The strongest through-line across scripture, theology, and moral philosophy is that service is an act of humility, love, and self-offering, not merely a task or duty. To serve is to willingly place your abilities, time, and strength at the disposal of God or others, motivated by love, humility, and obedience. It is self-giving rather than self-seeking.

Serving others is an expression of love in action. Jesus reframes greatness itself around service. In the Bible, Mark 10:45 is one of the clearest, most concentrated statements of Jesus’ mission and the meaning of true greatness. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45).

This summer, as the heat turns on and we look for summer activities with family and friends, look for ways to serve.

Percy’s Summer Scavenger Hunt Challenge

Squeak hello, friends! It’s me — Percy, your faithful (and very busy) church mouse. I’ve been scampering all around PLPC this week with my tiny camera, taking close‑up pictures of things I found interesting, mysterious, or just plain fun.
Now it’s your turn! Take a look at the collage and see if you can figure out where each picture was taken. Some are easy… some might make you lean in real close… and a couple might have you wondering what on earth I was up to.
When you’ve got your guesses ready, email them to me at Percy.plpc@gmail.com.
Make sure to squeak them in by Wednesday at 2:00 PM so I can tally everything up and pick a winner.
Good luck, detectives — may your eyes be sharp and your curiosity even sharper!”

A simple way to share God's love

Our Blessing Box continues to be a steady source of help for our neighbors, thanks to your faithful donations. Every can, box, and bag you share makes a real difference. As summer settles in and the temperatures climb, we’re shifting our focus toward warm‑weather essentials. Bottled water is especially needed this time of year, and even a small contribution can offer comfort and care to someone in the heat
